Stuff.Dick Cheney shoots man. (13.2.2006, 00:52 UTC)
Seen on TV, US VP Dick Cheney accidentally unloaded a shotgun round into the face, neck and chest of a 78 year old hunting companion on Saturday. The victim, Mr Harry Whittington a lawyer from Texas is said to be “alert and doing fine” in a Corpus Christi hospital. House Republicans only regret that it wasn’t a liberal into which Mr Cheney discharged his weapon. (That part is a joke)

Stuff.VMware server won’t cost you a thing (6.2.2006, 12:00 UTC)
–Full disclosure: I benefit materially from VMware’s ongoing success First it was the VMware Player now it’s the VMware Server. The press jumped the gun on this earlier last week and I wasn’t willing to add fuel to the fire at the time but that was then, this is now, and right now you should know that VMware server is a free download from VMware.com The product is currently in Beta (But these days what isn’t) at the moment, is available for both Windows & Li...

Stuff.2IGTV: Vidcast Technology Policy (4.2.2006, 18:09 UTC)
The 2IGTV vidcasts are proving to be more trouble than they are worth, people complaining about the end result not being in WMV format. To those people I say tough shit. I bought the HD camcorder, I own the workstation, I bought the editing software, I pay for the hosting and the bandwidth, so I’ll decide what the delivery format is. When you’re paying the bills then you can have an opinion. If you’re not willing to install QuickTime, iTunes, the VLC Media Player, or a hos...

Stuff.2IGTV: We add insult to injury. (30.1.2006, 19:48 UTC)
When I listen to some of the other Irish podcasts out there I’m amazed at how professional a lot of them are. 2IGTV isn’t like that, nor do I hope it ever will be, and to prove how unprofessional we are we even made a videocast for you which I think encapsulates the 2IGTV design methodology. Note: If I was playing bullshit buzzword bingo I’d have added the wankathon phrase Web 2.0 in there somewhere, the fact that I didn’t proves how unprofessional I am.

Stuff.PC gaming biz circling the drain? (27.1.2006, 21:34 UTC)
In our most recent podcast Ciaran states that the PC gaming market isn’t shrinking. it’s just resting, or some other such nonsense. He then uses some voodoo economics to prove his point. To be honest I’m not sure what he used to prove his point as I started hearing circus music the longer he went on. Here’s a question for Colonel Pie Chart, if it’s not shrinking then why is it that the video game stores I visited tonight appear to now dedicate less and less shelf ...

Stuff.Disney to buy Pixar..maybe (22.1.2006, 21:27 UTC)
It’s starting to look like this deal might close before the end of this week. I say might as Steve Jobs has a track record of screwing people around when it comes to pulling the trigger on such things. Former Apple CEO Gil Amelio documenting the will I/won’t I tap dance performed by Jobs in his book On The Firing Line. For the record, Pixar’s SEC filings state that Jobs holds 50.5% of all Pixar stock, which besides having a current valuation of $3.5B means that his vote is th...

Stuff. When only the title of your post is right.. (11.1.2006, 00:56 UTC)
Obviously having not read my Curb your Macworld enthusiasm post Damien asks if Mac users support the porting of iLife to Windows since they spend so much time bitching about other companies porting their applications to the Mac. I’m sure a vocal minority of them do, but a vocal minority of them also support resurrecting the Newton and giving Copland one more shot at being the successor to System 7, so it’s fortunate for us that like every other asshole with an opinion they have a s...

Stuff.Apple service providers in Cork? (7.1.2006, 02:50 UTC)
Any suggestions about good Macintosh repair places in Cork? My PowerMac G5 has taken to not powering on. It performed tonight’s backup I shut it down, (Though I should have realised something was up when the backup took so long and logged so many errors) I went to the movies, came back and hit the power button only to hear the fans spin up and hear the system shut down. All this happens in less than two seconds, it doesn’t even get to the chime before switching off so I’m gu...

Stuff.Attack of the Media Centre clones (6.1.2006, 03:46 UTC)
ViiV, Intel’s whatchamadoodle thing which is supposed to do something or other around media. It was supposed to be a massive rights stealing monster, when in reality we’ve found out that even Bill Gates wasn’t sure how to pronounce it, (Rhymes with Five) and now it looks to be nothing more than a Media Centre PC with Intel’s immense market development fund thrown at advertising. So yeah, it’s a sticker and a few ads. Rather lame idea right? No one would bother cha...

Stuff. What the heck is Apple iWeb? (5.1.2006, 20:04 UTC)
There on the iLife support page, large as life was a link to a community discussion for iWeb a component of the yet to be announced iLife 06. I’m a big iLife fan, I use every component except Garageband as I have zero musical ability, and iLife 06 was pretty much a given since the rev the product every year, but the prospect of some new web focused application is intriguing. As is usual with Apple these days the first version will show more promise than practicality but it’s kind o...

Stuff.O’Reilly’s War on Christmas (5.1.2006, 17:25 UTC)
The first causality of war is truth, unless you’re Bill O’Reilly where upon truth was never an issue in the first place. O’Reilly made a big deal on The Late Show with David Letterman about the “pinheads at Ridgewell Elementary School” who “knocked out the words to Silent Night and told the kids to sing alternative lyrics”. O’Reilly has been banging on about this since early December, it’s just another example of FOX News’s coverage o...

Stuff.Notes on the Microsoft CES 06 Keynote (5.1.2006, 04:18 UTC)
Watching the Microsoft CES keynote it’s hysterical to me that MTV (And their Urge music service), is being painted as something which has street cred in music. I can’t find music on MTV anymore, it’s filled with pointless reality shows and co-branding bullshit. The Vista demo? It looks like they’ve taken everyone else’s ideas and packaged them in a slightly different way. I was having MacOS X and Project Looking Glass flashbacks right through the demo. This clearly...

Stuff.Letterman slaps O’Reilly around the place (5.1.2006, 00:49 UTC)
The late-night program hosted by David Letterman is the toughest interview show on television. That’s because Mr. Letterman is a smart guy who can spot a phony with telescopic accuracy and expects his guests to bring something to the table. If a guest begins to sink on this show, the bottom is a long way down. –Bill O’Reilly In this case the sinking starts the moment O’Reilly jumps onto his War against Christmas hobby horse, which since support for the Iraq war is in ...

Stuff.WMF: All means All (3.1.2006, 00:48 UTC)
I wasn’t going to bother posting anything about the WMF vulnerability as being a Mac user at home and a UNIX user at work it doesn’t matter a jot to to me, but I found this part of the SANS WMF FAQ interesting. Note: If you’re still running on Win98/ME, this is a watershed moment: we believe (untested) that your system is vulnerable and there will be no patch from MS. Your mitigation options are very limited. You really need to upgrade. They believe correctly. Every versi...

Stuff.Nintendo DS WiFi: Better than XBox 360, probably better than you too (30.12.2005, 17:40 UTC)
Yes it’s happened I’m already bored with the XBox 360. Sorry folks but the launch games just don’t have enough pop to sustain my interest and I’ve been getting my videogame kicks elsewhere. What I’ve gone back to in a big way is the Nintendo DS, the system once written off by the elite as being too gimmicky to be interesting proving to be interesting indeed. Stuff.Macworld SF: Curb your enthusiasm (28.12.2005, 18:49 UTC)
The first draft of this was long and rambling using examples and supporting materials from as far back as ten years ago but I scrapped it, and rightly too. Lets cut to the chase then, I’ve been hyper focused on every tent pole Apple focused expo since before they announced that Steve Jobs (Viva el Stevo) was returning to Apple, and if there’s anything I’ve learned in the years after that event it’s to not build up your expectations. Be interested, but you’ll be a ...

Stuff.XBox 360 killing the games business? (27.12.2005, 01:15 UTC)
The WSJ, (login required so I’m not going to link it), is running an article saying that the XBox 360 has tanked video games sales for this quarter. The thinking being that people are now focused on the 360 and the consoles due to follow it, not on games on released for the current non-360 systems. That’s nonsense. As I pointed out in previous entries the PS2 has been back ordered since early October, the reason why games sales are down is a lack of quality software at retail. 20...

Stuff.When bloggers lie (26.12.2005, 00:58 UTC)
Having looked at Michael Moore’s dexterity with the truth in a previous entry, it’s time to turn the spotlight on some bloggers. While watching TV earlier I noticed that one of the top 10 E! 101 Even Bigger Celebrity Oops!, (quality programming for Christmas night), was the whole CBS memo debacle. Remember those memos which pointed out how Bush ditched his National Guard duty, memos that were then debunked by right wing bloggers, and resulted in firings of 60 Minutes executives and...

Stuff.Michael Moore: Rich white guy (19.12.2005, 23:42 UTC)
While watching TV I winced when hypocrite Michael Moore popped on the documentary “The Corporation” railing against big business. The usual self promoting stump speech you’d say, nothing new there. What if I told you that according to Moore’s tax filings he currently has had or has previously owned 2,000 shares of Boeing, nearly 1,000 of Sonoco, more than 4,000 of Best Foods, more than 3,000 of Eli Lilly, more than 8,000 of Bank One and more than 2,000 shares of Hallibu...
