2005 nears it end, as usual travel plans have taken a priority again. Where I went in 2005: Paris, France Lagos, Nigeria (work) Madrid, Spain Peru Montreal, Canada (work) Pisa and Florence, Italy On the drawing board for 2006: Washington, USA (work) Krakow, Poland The trip: Trans-Siberian - Moscow -> Irkutsk (Russia) -> Ulan Baator (Mongolia) -> Beijing (China) At the risk of shooting myself in the foot I am soooo looking forward to the trans-siberian, by all accounts one he...

I’m looking forward to seeing The Libertine, a biopic of sorts of the Earl of Rochester - John Wilmot, starring Johnny Depp. Why you may ask? Well just read the following poem he penned way back in 1670’s: Regime de Vivre, Earl of Rochester - John Wilmot I rise at eleven, I dine about two, I get drunk before seven; and the next thing I do, I send for my whore, when for fear of a clap, I spend in her hand, and I spew in her lap. Then we quarrel and scold, ’till I fall fast a...

This week I am mostly listening to… Head Automatica, Decadence, a ’spin-off’ band headed by Glassjaw’s Daryl Palumbo and produced by Dan ‘The Automator’ Nakamura, he of Gorillaz and bucket loads of other production credits. Its pretty pop-rock stuff, no great intellect required but feck it gets me bopping. I have been a huge fan of Glassjaw, and am looking forward to their next release but this is a welcome chance to hear Daryl’s crazed vocalization...

If you are ever being chased by a police dog try not to go through a tunnel, then on to a little seesaw, then jump through a hoop of fire. They are trained for that. I have also jumped from Meteor to Three, getting myself a brand new SonyEricsson k608i, which is the shiznit. I will be posting about Three/3 and how my ‘trial’ goes with them. So far it has been a positive experience.

bringitdown / sbradish.netFlorence, and a fall (25.10.2005, 09:48 UTC)
Hey hey kids …. hoo hoo ha ha ha… Just back from Florence and Pisa, good times had by all. The Leaning Tower is certainly a sight. Climbing it is a surreal experience as your balance shifts from left to right constantly making you somewhat dizzy. Add to that a sprinkling of hangover and then try and sprint back down it …. Florence is unreal, like an open air museum. Sculptures everywhere, the Duomo (again worth a climb) is some spectacle inside and out, grand piazza’s...

I was wandering down Abbey street today minding my own business and noticed 2 whippersnappers messing with those sparkler things. How young and innocent they looked. I went on my business and returned the same route not ten minutes later. I saw the 2 kids running off in the opposite direction. I then noticed flames inside the boarded up tourist shop on Lower Abbey Street. 2+2, the little bastards not 9 or 10 years old had ‘posted’ the sparklers in the letter box. Fire brigade call...

Over and done with, as this was a a much more professional affair then I thought it would I have little to say! It was exhausting, 12 hour days couped up in an air conditioned lab with little natural light. Sucked! MTL itself is a nice city, I would like to revisit as a tourist proper, and see more of Canada to boot. Quebec is waaaaaay more French than I ever thought it would be. It is like a mangled version of France and the USA! What little I did see is now on my photo album. Peace out.

Well I got bored in Montreal pretty quickly, Airport->hotel->work->hotel->work…. ad infinitum. So my mind began to wonder/wander/meander and I remembered I always wanted a tattoo, or even several. Upon cleaning up / finalizing the design I had in mind for ages, I tottered off to the local tattoo artist, as recommended by Lonely Planet, and manys the blog Adrenaline Tattoo. And a fine job did Eric do. The result is as follows, looking down on my shoulder. Apologies for crappy camera / ph...

I am off (touch wood) to Montreal, Canada this weekend for a 3 week excursion. Granted I will be installing, testing software and training the bucks over there but I’m sure I’ll fit some sight seeing in. It brings my travels to 3 continents this year: North America (Canada), South America (Peru) and Africa (Nigeria). Soon to join their ranks as having been graced by my presence is Florence in Italy. A long cultured weekend planned there in late October. ‘Tis such tough going t...

Well the Electric Picnic ruled, absolutely, here are a couple of picks: The Arcade Fire + Nick Cave win my ‘coveted’ lock of the gig, excellent stuff. Kraftwerk - zany and entertaining music. Mercury Rev - great stuff. JJ72 - Not bad at all, hope it works out for you guys. PJ Gallagher - a comedian to watch, great set, laughed my socks off. Silent Disco - the funniest most entertaining thing I tell thee, all nightclubs should be like this! Bavaria / Bacardi / Bud / Redbull ...

Unbelievable, I simply cannot say how amazing / tragic / disheartening the whole thing is. Amazing - the sheer strength and scale of the storm and the resultant destruction. Tragic - the loss of life, and livelyhoods. Disheartening - the reaction of some people in New Orleans - looting, raping, shooting. That amazing program Google Earth has some image overlays that convey a sense of the destruction if the news doesn’t suffice. Find them HERE.

Off to the Electric Picnic this weekend for what promises to be a quite unique experience. Nick Cave, Kraftwerk, The Arcade Fire, Doves, The Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and much more. Not to mention those festival icons: watery beer, dodgy drunken camping, bad fast food, horrible toilets, can’t fupping wait! Hope the weather is good, the last hurrah, HURRAH, of the summer. (Hurrah is a wierd word).

I had the priviledge to watch an amazing game of hurling from the premium level of Croke Park yesterday. Voices were lost, the ref was cursed, nails were bitten into oblivion, 9 goals were scored, Healy had a hatrick and Ger Farragher scored two goals and a bucket loads of points to boot. Galway beat the ‘Cats’ in a stunning game. Granted the defence (both sides) had some whoppers but who cared it was so bloody entertaining. The game demonstrates how hurling when played like that...

Dart drivers are claiming an extra €20,000 bonus for ….. wait for it ….. allowing 2 whole extra carriages on their service. So instead of the standard 6-car train they drive an 8 car train. Is there an extra button to press? Is there a new lever to pull? No. Do they have to change work practice much, hell NO. Well mom’s gonna fix it all soon. Top o’ the very fine mornin to ye. The cult of Jimmy is spreading. Last night bouncers, random members of the public they were all talking to Jimmy. What is this strange cult you ask? Well in the spirit of stupidity (like most of our schemes) we have taken to calling EVERYONE Jimmy regardless of name knowledge. The best one so far was a bouncer from the Village saying his name was Jimmy and refusing entry to one of us. As a result we consulted anot...

One of the most interesting things I did on the trip to Peru was teach the porters on the Inca Trail how to play shithead. The lesson went as follows in pigeon spanish (with literal translations): Normalmente - tienes que poner lo mismo, o mas que eso. Normally - you need to put the same, or more than that. El siete es especial, tienes que poner lo mismo, o menos que siete. The seven is special, you have to put the same or less than seven. El dos es epecial, puedes tirarlo cada tiempo. ...
