Pledge Request: Fax Your TD
John Handelaar is looking for some people to support his efforts to develop an Irish equivalent of the hugely successful UK site WriteToThem.com for contacting UK politicians. The Irish version of the site would allow people to contact their councillors, TDs and MEPs for free. If you are interested in helping out, visit www.pledgebank.com/faxyourtd BEFORE 1ST FEBRUARY.

Damien MulleyWho was Ireland’s first blogger? (6.2.2006, 13:58 UTC)
I just did a press interview there and was asked who was the first blogger in Ireland. It’d be good to research who this was. I don’t know who it was but I did mention that Ireland had one of the first websites in the world thanks to Peter Flynn of UCC so Irish people were getting their point across online since the very start. So who was our first blogger or the first website which allowed comments on a page (and not via a guest book)? Technorati Tags: blogger blogs ireland irish ...

Damien MulleyFiona starts the next blog war - Abortion is the topic (6.2.2006, 12:44 UTC)
Fiona says she thinks abortion should be legal. I have a feeling this will get quite emotive and probably personal judging by those in the Blogosphere who are against abortion and those who are keen supporters of the right to bodily integrity. Fiona also seems to lay down a challenge: I have yet to hear a rational, non-emotional and non-theological argument against legalising abortion in Ireland. I’ll definitely be tuned into this one because I think it is going to be topical for a long...

Draft 2. Thanks to all for the public and private feedback. **** 2fm DJ Rick O’Shea is to host Ireland’s first ever Blogging Awards. The radio show host will act as MC for the awards bash, billed as the inaugural celebration of Ireland’s online blogging community. O’Shea began his own online weblog in 2005, and volunteered his MC services as one of Ireland’s most high-profile bloggers. Ireland’s blog community has mushroomed in 2005 with over 1000 peo...

Vote for your favourite Irish Blogs now. I’m giving those that read this blog a sneak peak. I’ll be making an announcement after midnight on the Irish Blog Awards site. First I must write a few posts on sponsorships and the like. Have had 3 offers so far to sponsor the overall thing which was quite impressive. Must also put that press release together and release it to the press in the morning. Big thanks to all my sponsors and to the folks of IrishBlogs for making the voting scrip...

Increasing Broadband Availability Given Ireland’s spatial patterns, what are the most effective ways to accelerate the rollout of broadband services to all? Damien MulleyConferences - Any Irish people care to impart advice? (2.2.2006, 15:10 UTC)
Jeff Jarvis recently taked about creating a new model for conferences to which Robert Scoble shared his experiences. Jeff as usual has given some great advice and Robert added to that and clarified some of the matters. Previously I mentioned the idea of having unconferences in Ireland and now I’m asking the bloggers out there to share some of their advice from organising conferences in Ireland. Damien MulleyIn which he almost faints on reading a headline (1.2.2006, 23:36 UTC)
From the Examiner A hotel yards from Government buildings was tonight at the centre of a major Garda investigation into IRA money laundering. There goes my venue for the awards I thought. But then I exhaled. The Earl of Kildare Hotel, which is less than 100 metres from the Dáil, was searched by detectives from the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) last week. Not Buswells. Thank feck. In the past 3 hours I have gotten 21 nominations all for the same blog for the best technology category. The reason the Blog Awards are not all about a public vote is for abuse like this. Emailing all your friends who don’t read Irish blogs so they can nominate you is not impressing me at all. I’m now going to set up a filter to autodelete anything that comes in with your blog name. One nomination will do. As for everyone else, get nominating blogs you would like to see win, not bl...

Damien MulleyTorturing your Digital Rights (30.1.2006, 10:16 UTC)
Bernie comes up with the idea of Digital Rendition where our personal data is snatched by a third party, brought over to a detention centre in another country, is examined and “tortured” before the information is extracted and sent back to the authorities in Ireland. In a way, this is what IRMA does when they hire MediaSentry to spy on Irish people. I can’t seem to find the mp3 download link for this though. Damien MulleyMoral Test - Ireland’s Elderly and Ireland’s Children (30.1.2006, 09:30 UTC)
“The moral test of a government is how it treats those who are at the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the aged; and those who are in the shadow of life, the sick and the needy, and the handicapped.” - Hubert H. Humphrey The National Economic and Social Forum (NESF) said Irish spending on the elderly is the lowest in Europe, at almost €6,500 per person compared to €19,500 in Denmark. Damien MulleySelf Harm - John was in the Business Post today (29.1.2006, 21:56 UTC)
Self harm is a blog by John which helps to explain what self-harm is and why people cut themselves and inflict other forms of harm on themselves. I’ve been reading the blog a while now and it’s educated me quite a lot about this issue. I didn’t nominate many blogs for the blogawards but I did nominate this blog in the Best Personal Blog category. This blog deserves a bigger audience in my opinion and it was great to see Markham write a piece in the Sunday Business Post about ...

Damien MulleyLots of talk about Venture Capitalists going around. (29.1.2006, 21:29 UTC)
There’s a lot of talk about rebooting or changing the way venture capitalism works. I wonder is all this renewed talk down to this guy? Scoble mentioned one thing which I suppose is true about software companies: But today’s world isn’t money constrained. You don’t need much money to build software or services So, I wonder, what is the biggest reason for companies to seek money? Wages for emlpoyees? Hardware costs? John Battelle asked Google what details they store and I think this has stark implications for Ireland with the new Data Retention Spy Law. These “server logs” typically include your web request, Internet Protocol address, browser type, browser language, the date and time of your request and one or more cookies that may uniquely identify your browser In other words, yes, Google does record this data. But, does it KEEP that data, I asked? The answer: Yes Kind of on the same topic...
