Johnny KMovie: Hotel Rwanda (12.2.2006, 00:34 UTC)
We broke our bad DVD run tonight when we watched Terry George’s fantastic Hotel Rwanda. An inspirational story based on real life events during the civil war in Rwanda, and an amazing performance from Don Cheadle, combine to make this movie one of the best I’ve seen. Cheadle lifts the story above his head, and carries it through the cowardice of western politicans, the brutality of the Hutu, the corruption of the Rwandian Army, the compassion of the Red Cross, and emerges triumphant...

Johnny KCalligaris Quadro (11.2.2006, 13:17 UTC)
I have just ordered the Quadro, a wall mounted folding table by Calligaris, from Montana Furniture. It will be ready for collection in 5-6 weeks, and I’m looking forward to retrieving it. This is an example of some nice furniture that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, because at €94 I think it’s a bargin.

Johnny KKobe hits 81 (11.2.2006, 11:46 UTC)
I don’t know how this news escaped me, but Kobe Bryant hit 81 against the Raptors on January 22nd.  This is the second highest haul in NBA history.  Wilt Chamberlain still holds the record, with his 100 point game in 1962.

Johnny KMovie: Assassination of Richard Nixon (10.2.2006, 22:49 UTC)
I’ll keep this brief, Penn was stunning, the movie bored me. One thing I noticed was how current the story was, yet it was based on real life events from 1974.

Johnny KBook: Calatrava - Bridges (10.2.2006, 22:38 UTC)
Those folks at Thames & Hudson have produed another gem in Calatrava - Bridges. I picked up a copy today, and I marvelled at the models, sketches, and photographs of this mans great work. The back cover photograph is of Dublin’s Joyce Bridge, and we should be proud to have it. Of course, when Macken Bridge is completed we will have two fine examples of his work on show in our capital. Johnny KWord of the Day (9.2.2006, 15:46 UTC)
After reading today’s dictionary.com word of the day, I can’t believe he became known as clippy: deus ex machina: an agent who appears unexpectedly to solve an apparently insoluble difficulty.

Johnny KCurrent TV (9.2.2006, 15:35 UTC)
I’m not sure it gets much better than this.  I turned on Channel 4 just in time to catch all of the match from Escape to Victory, and now Countdown is on.  Hmm, this not working lark is quite good you know.

Johnny KMovie: Match Point (9.2.2006, 15:31 UTC)
I got my self out of bed in time for the 10:20 showing of Match Point, Woody Allen’s latest movie. Just to get it out of the way, yes Scarlett was looking her usual lovely self. It’s so unusual to see a beautiful actress who is happy in her body, and doesn’t try to make herself just another Hollywood body. In one scene in the rain, her love handles make an appearance, which was refreshing to see. Anyway, enough with my disseration of roasting hot Scarlett, and back to the m...

Johnny K“Wally Power” (9.2.2006, 03:18 UTC)
I noticed I was getting a lot of hits for the image of the wallypower yacht from Google image searches. So I just thought I’d find out what position in the results my site had achieved and confirmed that it is on the second page of results for “wallypower”. I also tried using the search phrase “wally power“, and spotted quite an ironic hit: Wally power to the max, I’d say.

Johnny KMovie: Jarhead (8.2.2006, 15:36 UTC)
I went to a 12:50 showing of Jarhead today. I love going to the cinema very early in the day, as there are no assholes making noise, kicking seats, answering phones, and doing all those other annoying things that take from the experience. I was looking forward to Jarhead, as it is a story about soldiers, rather than war itself. Unfortunately, it just didn’t immerse me. The aura of being a marine is apparantly something the audience should understand from seeing a man being branded with ...

Johnny KMagazine: Nota Bene Destination Review (8.2.2006, 00:11 UTC)
In this weeks Sunday Business Post, I found reference to the Nota Bene destination review. I signed up for the complimentary issue, which reviews London. It is a magnificent magazine that is firmly aimed at the more affluent members of society. Regardless of this impediment I am still a sucker for beautiful magazines so I thought I’d check out how much a 12 month subscription would cost. As it happens the £295 price tag is a couple of steps too far for me. I am jealous of those wh...

Johnny KFighting Climate Change With Obesity (7.2.2006, 14:40 UTC)
The following is a letter by Ken Brown, published in New Scientist, in February 2005: About 20 percent of the world’s population is grossly overweight. Reducing this excess adipose tissue would mean adding roughly 10 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Fatties are green. Measure should be taken to encourage these public benefactors. A most unique perspective.

Johnny KTee-shirt Folding (6.2.2006, 14:02 UTC)
As Joe mentioned, this tee-shirt folding technique is not new, but as I had an airer full of tee-shirts this morning, I decided to try it out. When it comes to folding tee-shirts, I can honestly say I don’t know why anyone would use a different technique, it is absolutely amazing. It will take only five minutes to learn, but will save you a load of time in the future. (Big shout out to all of you other domesticated males)

Johnny KGot Milk? (4.2.2006, 01:19 UTC)
I was saying to some people this evening, that I could see a market for human breast milk products in the next few years. I didn’t just pluck this thought from the sky, we were talking about this because one of my friends is pregnant, and because Channel 4 had a program about ‘Extraordinary Breastfeeding‘.So why do I think this is going to happen? Well there are so many products on the market that are soooooo good for you. You know you’ve seen the adverts (and in most ...

Johnny KFirst Nokia 770 Post (3.2.2006, 18:05 UTC)
I received my Nokia 770 today (a parting gift from all in Cape Clear). It really is a sweet piece of kit and I am authoring this post on it right now. It took me 5 minutes to get it on my wireless network, and another 10 to get it paired with my T630 and dialling up. The screen is amazing and the sample trailer that ships with it looks very well in fullscreen mode. I haven’t tried playing audio on it yet. Update: I brought the 770 into the Cape Clear office today, and all the engineers ...

Here’s mine: Cache Status Greasemonkey UrlParams View Rendered Source Chart Web Developer Gmail Manager The two I need to install everytime I have a new Firefox install are the Gmail Manager and Greasemonkey. Do you use Firefox? If so let me know what extensions you love and why (or link back to your list if you have already compiled one).

Johnny KMovie: Mike Basset England Manager (29.1.2006, 18:51 UTC)
We’re obviously on a bad run with our rentals, following hot on the heels of Million Dollar Baby we endured Mike Basset England Manager. What a load of old rot! A few good jokes does not a good movie make. Martin Bashir is as good in this as his work with Michael Jackson!

Johnny KThe Return Of God (29.1.2006, 17:31 UTC)
Robbie Fowler is back at Anfield. When I heard the news on Friday, I was genuinely excited. Fowler is the best finisher I have seen play, but I have never seen him in the flesh. Myself and a friend were planning a trip to Anfield at the start of the year, so I said to him we should go to the Manchester City game toward the end of February, as Fowler may get a game and I’d love to see him play live. We booked it and were really looking forward to it.  This new has made it all the m...

Johnny KParting Is Such Sweet Sorrow (29.1.2006, 17:26 UTC)
Friday was my last day working for Cape Clear. I had been with the company for 5 years and it is going to be a weird not seeing my friends on an almost daily basis. Thanks to all the people in Cape Clear for a wonderful 5 years, we’ve had many good times. So why did I leave? I decided I needed a change as I have had my fill of middleware and Java. In a nutshell (no O’Reilly pun intended), I needed a new challenge, I needed to learn something new. Anyway, if you are a Java develop...

Johnny KParty Etiquette (26.1.2006, 16:46 UTC)
Sarah was recently looking for people’s opinions about whether bringing pre-chilled drink to a party is bad form? As you can see from the comment thread, the general opinion is that it is perfectly fine to do so, and people would be very surprised if the host was offended. On Apartment Therapy today, a question was posted regarding the removal of shoes for a party. My friends and I received an invitation to a party and upon arrival, we were told that we had to take off our shoes. there wa...

Johnny KThe Stewie Show (26.1.2006, 00:44 UTC)
Reuters reports on a new talk show, hosted by Family Guy’s Stewie. I am skeptical about this. I would love it to be a success, but the salient part of Stewie’s character has been short bursts of comtempt for his parents and the world at large. I hope a talk show isn’t a step too far for the little bag of hate that we all love.

Johnny KShame on you Google (25.1.2006, 19:08 UTC)
Just after I mentioned my disdain for Yahoo! and their bend-me-over techniques in China, Google go and learn yoga, so they can get their ass in the perfect position for some totalitarian rodgering.  A decision like this must make it easier to carry the burden of their informal motto “Don’t be evil” (rumor has it Larry and Serg like to be called Pinky and Brain, and thought an oxymoronic motto would just be cool - okay I made that up).  Their Code of Conduct states: I...

Johnny KAre You Sleeping Well? (25.1.2006, 00:50 UTC)
Lifehacker recently posted about an article in Psychology Today on how to get a good nights sleep. Well I don’t know about the psychology behind sleep, but I did happen to read about some technology that could help. The aXbo sleep phase alarm clock: The unique wake-up-algorithm of aXbo chooses the optimal wake up time through differentiating the various sleeping phases by tracking the body movements. It thus determines the optimal wake up time. Your movements are detected and gathered...

Johnny KYahoo! Gone Mad! (25.1.2006, 00:12 UTC)
The Seattle Post reports on some madness that has afflicted Yahoo!. “We don’t think it’s reasonable to assume we’re going to gain a lot of share from Google,” Chief Financial Officer Susan Decker said in an interview. “It’s not our goal to be No. 1 in Internet search. We would be very happy to maintain our market share.”? Can anyone provide some insight into why Decker would make such a statement? Especially after: Shares of Yahoo! fell as much as...

Johnny KSite Stats (24.1.2006, 03:20 UTC)
Aehso posted a graph of the browsers that have been used to visit his blog. I thought it’d be nice to do the same for Johnny K: I have a few more IE users than Aehso, but it’s still nice to see that Firefox has such a good share of the pie. As for the 56.7% of you who are using IE, go get Firefox, you don’t know what you are missing.  Unsurprisingly, on the operating system front, Windows is easily the majority shareholder: As Aehso said, the graphs are produced by the ...

Johnny KRubber Face Clarkson (24.1.2006, 00:08 UTC)
The video on Darren’s blog shows Clarkson racing around Laguna Seca, in a Honda NSX, as he tries to beat the time he set on a PlayStation. The commentator on Kotaku notes: Watching him tear through the real track is hilarious, there are several moments were it looks like the guy’s going to start projectile vomiting. Well I think that is overstating it big style. The only time I have seen Clarkson get sick is when he was the passenger in an F-15 fighter. But, the funniest facial ex...
