Arrive Alive..........Penalty Points about to be added…Hoorah! (3.2.2006, 13:03 UTC)
Last week the Minister for Transport Martin Cullen TD announced the introduction of a further 30 offences to the existing 4(!) On the first of April (an appropriate date!!!) these additional offences will become live and Motorists need to be alert and aware especially since there has also been promised a much greater Garda presence on the side of the road or in the middle, as the case may be.One of the omissions during the announcement, much to the dismay of sensible Motorists and indeed The Dr...

Arrive Alive..........Do Dog Handlers need to Pass a Dog Driving Test? (22.1.2006, 07:53 UTC)
This morning’s post is inspired by an excellent new Website that specializes in Dog Training. It’s at the following link http://www.dogpotentials.com and the Author is Christi Upson who has been training dogs for more years than Joe Vitale has books to his credit. Who is Joe Vitale you might ask? Well Joe is an exceptional Author and Internet marketer with way too many books to his credit to list here (sorry Joe ...Just couldn’t resist!).I think it was Joe Vitale’s web ...

Arrive Alive..........S U V Debate Heightens across the Pond! (20.1.2006, 07:32 UTC)
We all have our views on that most unfriendly and hideous looking of gas guzzling machines. Personally I think they should all be banned or at the very least the intending purchasers of such monstrosities should be forced to take so me additional Eco- friendly and Socio-friendly courses followed by a Driving Test concentrating on courtesy to other Road Users. The small number of genuine usage-need drivers of this type of vehicle are far outweighed by the attention seekers and wealth flaunters i...

Arrive Alive..........Test Your Ability on the Basics Part Two … The Answers! (19.1.2006, 15:49 UTC)
Part Two Here are the answers to yesterday’s Questionnaire...are you sitting comfortably? 1. Open the Bonnet/Hood?.. Usually the Bonnet or Hood release latch is under the dashboard to the extreme right or left. The new Ford Focus however has its release latch hidden inside the badge on the front of the Bonnet/Hood. This might be a trend for the future. I am not exactly sure what the advantage of this outside connection is, especially if you are unlucky enough to have to open it in the...

The Internet has provided a fantastic resource for all writers to share their knowledge and experience with others and in so doing has created a whole new world for all of us. Our own lifetimes experience on the road can now be shared with all who are interested and who need to achive a full Driving Licence with the greatest chance of success. Here in Ireland unfortunately, the exponential growth in the Economy over the last ten years has put an inconceivable number of Learner drivers on the r...

Arrive Alive..........CARNAGE CONTINUES THROUGHOUT 2005 (12.1.2006, 22:09 UTC)
Today’s post looks at the Fatal Accident figures for Ireland for 2005 and proffers some hard hitting facts as to why we are failing to deal with the continuing carnage. Can our accident rate be reduced? Can we accept responsibility ourselves for these horrendous statistics? Can we do anything about it? Can we put in place some basic infrastructure that will eventually see some results? The answer to all these questions is a resounding YES. While the poor record of successive Ministers o...

Arrive Alive..........The Frost Files ... Brrrrrrr.! (13.12.2005, 17:38 UTC)
After the heaviest frost of the Winter so far it’s a good time to have a look at the do’s and don’ts of handling your car in these conditions. Whether you are a relatively experienced Driver or a novice, these wintry conditions require thought and planning if you are to stay safe and look after your car. Let’s look at the Car first:- 1. After a heavy frost you can’t just get in and drive off. Silly though this may sound, we still find drivers heading off to work, ...

Arrive Alive..........Were you Born under a Bad Sign? Or just a member of Ostritchology! (10.12.2005, 10:54 UTC)
Most of us can easily come up with all the excuses under the Sun as to why we are not successful and why things continually go wrong for us. But lets face it, and that’s difficult to do if you have brainwashed your self, success and achievement is down to good old You…. no one else. Yes of course there are many stumbling blocks along the way, some of which seem insurmountable at the time, but it’s your ability to pick yourself up and keep going, that makes the difference betwee...

On the first of January next, which is fast approaching we will have two landmarks to contend with .The Fourth Anniversary of the Non- Implementation of Driving School Registration and Monitoring and the Commencement of the stricter N.C.T rules regarding sporty exhausts (you know the Catering Size Baked Bean Cans welded together!) and blackened windows. We were fortunate to be invited to take part in a discussion live on Limerick 95 Fm earlier this month on this and other related Driving subject...

Arrive Alive..........Motor-Vate- Your- Motorway Trip (8.11.2005, 11:10 UTC)
One of the reasons for Learner Drivers not being allowed on Motorways is that clearly, by definition, everything is going at a much faster speed. The speed of the vehicles; the speed of your Brain; the speed at which you reach and pass your turn-offs; the speed that a vehicle comes into view and disappears into the distance; the speed with which you have to react; the speed that OTHER DRIVERS do things; the speed at which you make mistakes. Our few stretches of Motorway here in Ireland with the...

Arrive Alive..........Home again and back to Earth (N.E.C Rocks!) (7.11.2005, 16:56 UTC)
After an absence of just over a week (problems with my lap-top) we are back from Motor Heaven and into the Driving Seat. Ten counties plus in a week is fairly tiring but the end of our trip saw us spending two nights in Birmingham or Solihull to be more precise and a full day at the Classic Motor Show. You would certainly need the full three days of the event at the N.E.C to cover all the stands and exhibits. It is well worth the effort for any Driver (learner or otherwise) who has the slightes...

We are off on a mini Tour in 48 hours to visit the Classic and Sports Car show at the N.E.C in Birmingham so our posting will be a little thin for a week or so. An old and dear friend from schooldays long ago is part of the activities of a Motor Club that gives Classic rides in their Classic cars. I expect we will get a special discount in his Porsche 911 which is one of the greatest Classics of all time. A few quick snippets of motoring news relating to Learners.Seen in Limerick today for the first time ever …perhaps it’s a world Exclusive. A learner driver’s car with two L Plates at the rear and one at the front. Makes a change from no plates or the ridiculous habit of cutting the white background off the plate making it nigh invisible. The whole idea of displaying L Plates is to identify your self as a beginner so that other drivers can be ready for the mistakes that you will ...

Arrive Alive..........The Wednesday Motoring Fix (26.10.2005, 13:00 UTC)
On a Wednesday the Irish Times produces an excellent Motors Supplement, called appropriately “Motors”. Motor stuff for all ages and interests, two wheels and four, are packed into 8 absorbing pages; well 5 actually since 3 of them are classifieds. The Resident Wit is a lively lad of indeterminate age called Kilian Doyle. His column called Emissions is guaranteed to make you smile if not break out in hysterics. His hair style isn’t bad either! The young Kilian passed his Drivin...

Arrive Alive..........Fatal Car Crash Driver arrested in Ireland (25.10.2005, 07:59 UTC)
A driver aged 23 who caused the deaths of three young people in their early twenties, four years ago was recaptured in Ireland at the weekend after fleeing from the United States. On the night of June 4th this Driver crashed into three cars while travelling at about 90mph and three young students aged 22, 21, and 21 were killed. All were occupants of one car. It’s an interesting story of how the Internet is shrinking, or rather has shrunk the World to miniscule proportions in just a few ye...

Arrive Alive..........Portable Traffic Lights for Rent.Great Income Opportunity! (24.10.2005, 19:30 UTC)
Just came across an ad for an interesting Web site that sells and rents Portable Traffic Lights. RCFLAGMAN.COM. Maybe, just maybe, we could learn how to correctly deal with Traffic Lights with this equipment, in a controlled environment, off road, since it seems to be one of the most ignored road instructions that Drivers have to deal with deal with. Might be useful for creating a little extra revenue if you set up these lights outside your house with a nice long time delay and you could then...

Arrive Alive..........Ten Quick Points for Improving you Driving Test Performance (24.10.2005, 10:34 UTC)
Here are a few pointers for you to consider: (1) Right foot ...use the right foot gently on both the gas and the brake pedals. Heavy braking will tell the Examiner that you haven’t prepared sufficiently in advance for your slow down! However when entering a busy major road from a minor road it’s important to get the power down promptly or a car approaching will be forced to brake heavily if you move off too slowly. (2) When preparing to slow down… or stop for say traffic lig...

Arrive Alive..........K.I.S.S and make up. (24.10.2005, 09:36 UTC)
Every one over the age of consent should have heard of the K.I.S.S. formula. Keep it simple stupid. It’s a useful philosophy in life especially for creative types I think. If your brain is going at 18,000 revolutions a minute rather like Schumacher at Monza, or Raikonnen at Spa -Francorchamps then things are likely to go a little off-course rather rapidement. What I am talking about is the need to be relaxed and calm in your Driving style. This clearly comes with experience and confiden...

Arrive Alive..........Road Safety Plan a Shambles (21.10.2005, 12:09 UTC)
Eddy Shaw, chief executive of the National Safety Council was interviewed on T.V last night when he talked about discussions he had been engaged in at Leinster House. He highlighted that probably 370 people would lose their lives on the roads by the end of the year.An acceptable level of fatalities, although none is acceptable, would be 240 per annum and this level would put us in an improved performance position in the European scheme of things. He mentioned that there was a great willingness t...

Arrive Alive..........Driving Test Examiners reviewing the Situation? (20.10.2005, 10:17 UTC)
Both Driving Test centres in Limerick and I imagine the rest of the Country are closed today and have been for a few days. Obviously the talks on the implementation of new structures are under way but what about the poor unfortunates waiting to sit their Tests? With 109 Examiners we are talking about something over Four thousand Tests gone awol if the centres are closed for a Week. So I guess this will once again become a topic for inclusion on the Nine O’clock news if it hasn’t alr...

Arrive Alive..........World Wide Trend to Curb Learner Driver Activities. (20.10.2005, 07:09 UTC)
Throughout the developed World the Authorities are finally waking up to the fact that unless stringent Learner Driver Laws are both introduced AND implemented then the procession of carnage and mayhem will continue unabated. Australian States are introducing a phased programme of Learner Driver requirements which include 50 hours of supervision by a qualified Driver and including 10 hours night Driving. American States are bringing in many new restrictions particularly in the use of cell phones...

Arrive Alive..........Driving Test Backlog Gets a Welcome Reduction! But When? (19.10.2005, 17:35 UTC)
Naturally any planned improvement in the long waiting times for a Driving Test is to be welcomed. But we have heard it so many times before and not seen any implementation of the various proposed ideas. Several years ago with extra Tests being conducted at Weekends and later Tests taking place during the longer summer evenings there was a very much improved situation. It foundered after just a few short weeks. Unfortunately there seemed to be a lack of communication between the various Departm...

Arrive Alive..........Formula One Season comes to a Cracking Finale (18.10.2005, 08:29 UTC)
The final race of the Season at Shanghai proved to be a fitting end to the Best Formula One Season in many a year, with recently crowned Champion Fernando Alonso winning his seventh Race to equal that of the Flying Finn Raikonnen. The constructors’ championship could have gone right to the last corner but for the Mercedes of Montoya having one of his all too regular excursions off the track earlier in the race.Next Season promises to be equally enthralling if not more so with the demise o...
