Fresh IdeasMeet the bud family… (10.2.2006, 12:33 UTC)
This is interesting, its an overview of all the budweiser brands. Its an interesting lesson in how to target brands to different markets. Only they do screw it up by having to many variants of bud.

Fresh IdeasTips for success: Don’t Suck… (30.1.2006, 17:20 UTC)
It’s a fact of life that most companies suck. Personally in the past few months my bank took over 6 weeks to set up a simple current account, a well know provider of broadband left a disabled friend of mine without service for over 4 months, and I am currently doing battle with two major internet companies who have completely fecked up a clients account. In other areas you have tradesmen who never turn up for appointments, you have offices where some employees should not be allowed out of...

Fresh IdeasTips for success: it is all about confidence… (24.1.2006, 16:12 UTC)
This year I celebrate the tenth anniversary of working for myself. To be honest, apart for a few weeks stacking shelves when I was 16, I have actually never had a real job, I always worked for myself. Like everything in life, there have been ups and downs, but generally I have had a good time and I would never consider taking a normal job. Once you have tasted the freedom of self employment you can never go back to the captivity of being a cog in the machine of business. Not that I am knocking p...

Fresh IdeasView ads, get free texts… (23.1.2006, 16:00 UTC)
From the Register: Mobile phone users are being offered the chance to send text messages for free in return for viewing ads on their phones. The service is due to be unveiled later this month with the firm behind it busy recruiting punters to take part in beta testing. Exactly how many free texts peoplewill receive depends entirely on how many advertisers are prepared to give away. The only people who would take up an offer like this are skint teenagers. Am I the only one who thinks bribing peop...

Fresh IdeasRadio days… (23.1.2006, 15:41 UTC)
Sometimes my life takes surreal turns. This morning I found myself on a Newstalk 106 radio panel with Edwina Currie, the famous ex Tory minister who nearly ruined the British egg industry and had an affair with ex UK Prime Minister John Major. I quite like her, I may not like her policies but at least she has personality, which is not something you can say about all politicians. The topic was who are more vengeful, women or men? Various tales where recounted, and hopefully the listeners found so...

Fresh IdeasOn the radio this monday… (20.1.2006, 15:52 UTC)
For those who are wondering what my dulcet tones sound like, you can hear me on the Orla Barry Show on Monday morning. It’s on Newstalk 106, and I was be in a panel group discussing male and female approaches to vengeance. Because I own a dating site and sound half sensible on the phone, I do these things quite often

One of the ironies of the design world is that agency websites tend to suck. See Mother London as a good example. I came across this one today, I thought it was pretty good, check it out: WDDG Make sure you play the movie on the mainpage.

Fresh IdeasNew Year, new look… (18.1.2006, 12:15 UTC)
I decided to upgrade to Wordpress 2.0, observate readers will also notice a new design. The joy of wordpress themes I am looking forward to testing the new spam filter in wordpress, I was plagued by spam before christmas, but the new Akismet spam prevention system looks quite good. The only thing is I am having problems with the new rich editor, I have had to turn it off as it was not formatting correctly. Anyone else have any issues with it?

Fresh IdeasGoogles late christmas present… (18.1.2006, 11:07 UTC)
I discovered last week that if you live outside the Republic of Ireland you do not have to pay VAT on Adwords. As I live in sunny Belfast, I ticked the little box concerning VAT. I did not think much more about it until I got an email from the good folks at google telling me I am getting a rebate on the VAT I have paid. A rebate to the tune of a grand sterling As you can imagine I am a happy bunny indeed. So if you are google user living outside the Republic of Ireland make sure to tick the bo...

Fresh IdeasCan you hear me? searching on your radio… (18.1.2006, 10:36 UTC)
From the register: Advertising giant Google has paid $106m for dMarc, which provides media-buying technology for digital radio. dMarc also provides the technology infrastructure for “station automation” - enabling the unmanned “ghost” stations so beloved by ClearChannel, and loathed by everyone else. dMarc claims to have 4,600 stations under its umbrella. Now I am just a guy with a blog, and google is a gazellion dollar company, but you get the feeling they must be trying...

Fresh IdeasArticle on ad blocking… (18.1.2006, 10:30 UTC)
From revolution mag: Why ad-blockers will cause everyone to lose out October 06, 2005 - Nitzan Yaniv My wife and I really enjoy watching ‘Lost’ on Channel 4 and I have duly set our Sky+ to record the series, just in case we miss an episode. Why should you care? Because the proliferation of ad-avoidance technology, such as PVRs on TV and ad blockers on the web could have a profound effect on one of the cornerstones of the online (and TV) ad industry – ad funded content. Ironical...

Fresh IdeasObserver relaunch… (9.1.2006, 12:47 UTC)
Did anyone see the new version of the Observer yesterday? It has been my paper of choice for 15 years but they have made a complete rehash of the new version. I was so annoyed that I even emailed them, the first time I ever done that. Having a look at their blog it seems other readers think it sucks too. What is interesting is how blogs allow papers to get feedback from their readers, although I can imagine the editor may regret this immediacy as they are getting a complete pasting. I also have...

Fresh IdeasBlak - Coca cola and coffee… boke more like… (15.12.2005, 17:31 UTC)
Coca Cola are bringing out a cola and coffee drink called Blak. You can see a photo of the monstrosityhere and read the press release here. Coca Cola is one of the worlds best know brands, extending the brand to these flash in the pan novelty drinks just damages the core brand. Brand extensions very seldom work, instead you should give new things their own brand. Story via: TCAL

Fresh IdeasDon’t forget your backups… (15.12.2005, 16:50 UTC)
The poor old Irish News website has been down all week, obviously something has gone horribly, horribly wrong. It’s a good reminder to us all of the important of backups. As I type this I am backing up all my files to an external hard drive. I use a Lacie pocket drive, and second copy software – these are an amazing combo. When I am finishing doing the back up I keep the drive off site in case my office goes up in flames. I am also thinking of going for an xdrive account, but I thin...

Fresh IdeasDon’t forget about your existing customers… (14.12.2005, 13:08 UTC)
One of the most common mistakes businesses make is concentrating on acquiring new customers and forgetting about keeping your existing customers happy. It is a fact that it is cheaper to sell to existing customers, than acquiring new customers. Likewise it is cheaper to maintain existing customers than acquire new ones. This is a simple lesson, but so many businesses treat their existing customer base badly. Let me give you an example. I am a customer of Orange, the UK mobile company. I am due ...

Fresh Ideasmid level quality – the smart way to do business (13.12.2005, 18:02 UTC)
The big problem in today’s marketplace is that prices are continually coming down. For example the other day I bought a Toshiba 21inch TV for £129, a few years ago it would have cost over £200. Dell Laptops that once cost over a grand can now be picked up for £500. Now obviously reduced prices are good for the consumer, but as you cut costs things like customer service are also reduced. I think the next big thing in business will be mid level quality. The modern consumer ca...

Fresh IdeasGoogle to create up to 700 more jobs… (12.12.2005, 13:44 UTC)
From the Post: ‘Internet search giant Google will create 700 new jobs in Ireland, providing a post-budget boost for the government and a major coup for IDA Ireland.’ I swear whatever they are paying those IDA guys, double it. They are having a fantastic run of job creation. I am based in the economic basket case that is Northern Ireland, and the contrast between North and South could not be more starker. INVest NI (the northern version of IDA) has something like 600 staff, but a ...

Fresh IdeasWhat’s the value of a brand? How about 900million? (12.12.2005, 11:16 UTC)
NTL UK are currently in take-over talks with Virgin mobile, NTL have made an offer of 900 million sterling for the business. NTL want to re-brand completely as ‘Virgin Television’ Now the really interesting thing is that Virgin mobile is a ‘virtual operator’, this means that they do not actually have a mobile network, they use T-Mobiles network. Essentially NTL is buying the brand, they realise that they have a very bad image in the market place (their nickname is NT H...

It’s been a funny few weeks on planet O’Neill. I picked up some new consultancy clients, and I have been busy working on their projects. Consultancy really is where it’s at; I thoroughly recommend it to any of you out there. With the rush of other work the old blog has been neglected, but I am now going to try to write at least one post a day. I think routine is important, especially for the self employed, so read on and send me a few comments or two..

Fresh IdeasSimply George Best… (25.11.2005, 16:56 UTC)
Being from Belfast you are used to people having a strange perception of Northern Ireland, but thankfully we do have our positive moments. George Best was one off our true hero’s, the best footballer who ever graced a field, and a decent fella to boot. As I tribute to George, I created a nice desktop wallpaper that you can set as your screen background. This is free and you can see it at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/50679361@N00/ If you like it pass the link on to your friends. The...

Fresh IdeasAds in games… (8.11.2005, 11:38 UTC)
This is a good articles from Wired, about advertising in games. I always liked the idea of ads in games, as long as they are not too intrusive they can work very well. Years ago I developed some really cool games in ads for eircom, you can have a play with them here: Would you believe those ads are actually 4 years old? aren’t they cool? It just go to show you what you can do with a little imagination. I must get around to putting some of my old ads online, there was some really goo...

Fresh IdeasMicrosofts tax dodging is great news for ireland… (7.11.2005, 17:08 UTC)
This is an amazing story from todays Wall St Journal. DUBLIN — A law firm’s office on a quiet downtown street here houses an obscure subsidiary of Microsoft Corp. that helps the computer giant shave at least $500 million from its annual tax bill. The four-year-old subsidiary, Round Island One Ltd., has a thin roster of employees but controls more than $16 billion in Microsoft assets. Virtually unknown in Ireland, on paper it has quickly become one of the country’s biggest c...

Fresh IdeasMicrosoft Live backtrack… (3.11.2005, 13:07 UTC)
I have been reading up more on MS new ‘live’ plans, and I must say they are very interesting. You can get a good overview here. Basically MS is declaring war on every competitor they have got: Hotmail is getting the gmail treatment pictures They are giving away free websites to businesses, including free domains, email etc. New safety centre where users can scan their pcs for free Loads off new online tools and buckets more… None of this is particular new, but where MS wins...
