Dave's RantsUnions Get Their PR Stunt (10.12.2005, 00:21 UTC)
So at this stage you’ll have seen the reports about the marches today. We’re supposed to be impressed because 80,000 or so people skipped off work to go on a march. To be honest I couldn’t give a toss, there’s hardly a person in the country who doesn’t think that what’s happening to the Irish Ferries workers is fair but that doesn’t mean that I support a march who’s purpose is to increase the power of the Unions. Recently the Unions have been crit...

Dave's RantsNew Windows Live Local (9.12.2005, 18:10 UTC)
Just been playing around with the new Windows Live Local and I must say I like it a lot. The zooming in/out function is excellent! Also it’s better than Google because I think the place names are much more accurate, Google Maps is a hodgepodge of Irish and English words for example there’ not a place in Galway that is named in English! Anyway it looks nice and is a nice improvement on what’s out their already. The only downside is that the aerial view doesn’t go all the w...

Dave's RantsIrish Tax Calculator (9.12.2005, 00:05 UTC)
One of the reason’s the volume of posting has reduced a lot here is that I’ve been reading a lot of financial stuff especially the forum on AskAboutMoney. Since yesterday was Budget day everyone’s take home pay has been affected but via AskAboutMoney comes this great Irish PAYE Tax Calculator. Works like a charm, I’ll be bringing home more money in the New Year, just not enough!

It’s a little late, well if you’re well prepared! Anyway via SvN comes Giftbox which is a handy site for managing all your Christmas present buying. It seems to be a good site and looks like it’d work well for birthday reminders and stuff too. I’ve just signed up for the free version and I’ll see how that works out!

Dave's RantsAre American’s Really Thicker Than Us? (7.12.2005, 23:17 UTC)
I’d love to really know, regularly you hear people going on about how Americans are far less intelligent than Irish people and have a much lower awareness of Geography and such like and aren’t able to pick out European countries on the map or what not. Well Caomihe linked to a site I hadn’t seen in a while. She linked to the European countries game but I had played the USA States Game before. I played both again to see how I did, I was quite happy with both scores. But the in...

Dave's RantsGreenpeace fined for reef damage (1.11.2005, 19:27 UTC)
Environmental group Greenpeace has been fined almost $7,000 (£4,000) for damaging a coral reef at a World Heritage site in the Philippines. Their flagship Rainbow Warrior II ran aground at Tubbataha Reef Marine Park, in the Sula Sea, 650km (400 miles) south-east of Manila. Park officials said almost 100 sq m (1,076 sq ft) of reef had been damaged. Greenpeace agreed to pay the fine, but blamed the accident on outdated maps provided by the Philippines government. Dave's RantsGeorge Galloway (25.10.2005, 23:07 UTC)
Nice to see that he’s under a bit of pressure again. Some sections of the press hold him up as some sort of crusader for righteousness. It’s nice to remind ourselves of his feelings on some of the most abhorrent regimes ever to have existed. I think the disappearance of the Soviet Union is the biggest catastrophe of my life [1] (To Hussein) - Sir: I salute your courage, your strength, your indefatigability. And I want you to know we are with you until victory, until Jerusalem. [...

Dave's RantsDeath of the iPod - Rise of the Walkman Phone (24.10.2005, 19:50 UTC)
For years and year’s I’ve been pretty anti-convergence. I’ve always been of the thinking that having separate devices was better than having a `jack of all trades’ device. So it’s actually with surprise I’m writing this entry about how I think that a mobile phone that does everything is the future. During the Summer I got myself a Sony Ericsson k750i and it’s been great so far. Recently the Sony Ericsson W800 Walkman phone launched and that has been met...

Dave's RantsMy Absense (23.10.2005, 22:08 UTC)
Just an update to explain the lack of content, I’ve been really busy all week in work and this weekend then I was parked in front of the TV for the start of this year’s Heineken Cup. I love the Heineken Cup and this weekend was even better than usual. There were loads of narrow wins and unexpected wins and as usual every group is unbelievably tight. It’s a huge contrast from the soccer European Cup where the groups are often mismatches and teams have it easy to get out of th...

Dave's RantsSunday Stories Round-Up (16.10.2005, 16:27 UTC)
Three stories caught my eye in today’s Sunday Times. Men lose out in battle for cancer cash - Apparently despite very similar occurances of breast and prostate cancer only 1/4 as much money is spent on research for prostate cancer. I often highlight discrepancies between the sexes here and this is one. Although this also has plenty to do with men being too afraid to talk about illness. Ireland under fire over extradition - Hot on the heels of the Colombia 3 crisis comes this news...

Dave's RantsLand of the Free (16.10.2005, 13:18 UTC)
Regularly I get in arguments with people on Boards.ie and more recently on Munsterfans.com over the fact that Irish people go on and on about the PATRIOT Act and how much it has restricted American’s freedoms. The comment I always make is that while it has no doubt restricted freedoms in the US it’s still an infinitely more free society than the Ireland and that we should fix our own country first. One of the examples I always use of what’s allowed in the US but not in Ireland...

Dave's RantsOver Engineering Your Start-Up (15.10.2005, 16:44 UTC)
Just reading this article on start-ups by Paul Graham, one part of it struck me as relevant and very very true. Another group was worried when they realized they had to rewrite their software from scratch. I told them it would be a bad sign if they didn’t. The main function of your initial version is to be rewritten. That’s why we advise groups to ignore issues like scalability, internationalization, and heavy-duty security at first. I can imagine an advocate of “best pract...

Dave's RantsFirefox Sucks Sometimes (15.10.2005, 11:34 UTC)
I like Firefox but no one seems to point out it’s flaws. Sure it’s more secure than IE but the hoops I have to jump through sometimes to get it to work are incredible. Take just there for example, Dad’s browser stopped working and he spent the morning trying to get it to work, he tried the normal things, uninstalling, reinstalling but to no avail. Whatever he did he couldn’t open new tabs etc. So he asked me about it and I had to tell him to go delete his ‘chrome
