Tom Raftery's I.T. viewsYahoo! purchase of Del.icio.us confirmed - who is flocking next? (9.12.2005, 21:41 UTC)
Well, the post I made last night about the Yahoo! < -> Del.icio.us rumours was confirmed this evening when Del.icio.us made the announcement of the takeover on its blog and Yahoo! posted the news also. All day today I was doubting my source ‘cos no-one else picked up the story but, no, it came good. It is a great feeling to scoop a story like this by about 24 hours ahead of everyone else on the Internet. Michael Arrington and others are following up on the story now. The real question ...

Tom Raftery's I.T. viewsContact details for Vint Cerf (9.12.2005, 17:17 UTC)
Does anyone have any contact details for Vint Cerf? Vint is one of the pioneers of the Internet -he played a key role in leading the development of the TCP/IP protocols and in September, Google announced that it hired Cerf as “Chief Internet Evangelist” I’d love to do an interview with him - I realise it might be difficult to interview him as he has a hearing impairment but he has done podcast interviews previously. If anyone knows how i could get in touch with him - please e...

Tom Raftery's I.T. viewsCaptcha’s are lame (9.12.2005, 16:08 UTC)
A captcha is an acronym for “completely automated public Turing test to tell computers and humans apart - in other words a type of challenge-response test used to determine whether or not a computer user is human (or another computer). From the Wikipedia entry on Captcha’s: A common type of captcha requires that the user type the letters of a distorted and/or obscured sequence of letters or digits that appears on the screen. Because the test is administered by a computer, in contr...

Tom Raftery's I.T. viewsAudacity stereo file exports to 11khz (9.12.2005, 15:46 UTC)
For those of you who have been following my podcasts, you will be aware that I recently switched from recording landline to landline to recording Skype calls and the audio quality of the podcasts increased markedly - or so I thought! However, I received an email from a Margaret this morning which said: I was wondering if you might be able to increase the Audio Sample Rate when you produce your next audio interview. The latest one with Mr. Ismail is done at 11kHz and my mp3 player won’t w...

Tom Raftery's I.T. viewsSome WordPress permalinks 404ing (9.12.2005, 08:23 UTC)
I was having a strange issue recently on this blog - occassionally a blog post would 404 when the PermaLink was clicked on - the post would appear fine in the blog’s main page but any attempt to view it individually would fail! Deleting the post and re-posting with a new title solved it, so some part of the title seemed to be causing the problem. This happened twice in the last couple of weeks - both times with podcast interviews posts. This got me thinking - I checked the mp3 filename an...

Tom Raftery's I.T. viewsYahoo! buying Del.icio.us? (8.12.2005, 19:39 UTC)
I have been hearing a rumour on the grapevine that Yahoo! may be buying Del.icio.us for between $30-$40 million. I’m not sure yet if this is more rumour-mongering - the same as the Riya-Google rumours of a few weeks ago or if there is something more behind this. UPDATE: The Yahoo! - Del.icio.us deal was announced today - cool, I was on the nail! Technorati Tags: Del.icio.us, yahoo, yahoo!Del.icio.us, yahoo, yahoo!

Tom Raftery's I.T. viewsIn the Guardian today (8.12.2005, 19:30 UTC)
Thanks to Liam Morrison for alerting me to the fact that I was quoted in the Guardian today in an article about full or partial feeds. The quote is inocuous enough - it simply says: As tech blogger Tom Raftery (tomrafteryit.net) notes: “Partial feeds are a pain - they force you to click through to get the full story, whereas when you get there you may very well find the full story is not as interesting as you thought.” I was surprised to hear I was being quoted - partly ‘cos...

Tom Raftery's I.T. viewsSalim Ismail interview coming up (6.12.2005, 13:59 UTC)
I will be interviewing Salim Ismail, CEO of PubSub in the next couple of days. Pubsub is a blog search engine or as Salim likes to say a “matching engine”. I was amazed to learn, from talking to Salim here at the les Blogs 2.0 conference, that Salim lived and worked in Cork for around a year and Salim is another fan of Murphy’s stout! If you have any questions you’d like me to ask Salim - please leave them in the comments Technorati Tags: blogs, pubsub, RSS, search, se...

Tom Raftery's I.T. viewsLes Blogs and extreme sports (6.12.2005, 10:03 UTC)
Sorry for the breakdown in the live blogging of the Les Blogs 2.0 conference yesterday but there is a serious lack of bandwidth and power in the auditorium. The conference dinner was great in terms of networking but poor in terms of nutrition (it was finger food for people with small fingers and smaller appetites)! I got to line up some incredible podcasts - look out for some amazing interviews in the coming weeks. The lack of food meant that the free alcohol went straight to everyone’s ...

Tom Raftery's I.T. viewsFlock crashing on G5 (2.12.2005, 16:59 UTC)
I recently treated myself to an Apple iMac G5 - I needed a new machine bcause of the increasing amount of podcasts I have been doing and my PowerBook’s sound board blew (replacing the sound board on a PowerBook costs over €600). I was using Flock from time to time on the PowerBook (the PowerBook uses a G4 chip) - when I transferred over to the iMac G5, however I find that Flock crashes on start-up. I tried downloading Flock again (v 1.4.1) and re-installing but no joy. Is anyone el...

Tom Raftery's I.T. viewsGoogle has rolled out a web version of Google Talk (1.12.2005, 16:23 UTC)
As the title suggests, Google has rolled out a Flash based version of Google Talk called Gtalkr. It includes a Yahoo Maps extension - as Google Maps is not Flash based - this is unfortunate because Yahoo Maps is US only Gtalkr also includes your Gmail account automatically (you log in using your Gmail credentials), so it looks like Google are trying to make this a home page for users. I spotted this on TechCrunch - hopefully the Google Talk blog will break the story soon! UPDATE: Robin has...

Skype today launched their Skype 2.0 application, complete with video calling capabilities! I’m a little confused, though because although Skype refer to the application as Skype 2.0 in their press release, it is called Skype 1.4 on the Mac download page. Tom Raftery's I.T. viewsCork Geek Dinner (1.12.2005, 14:56 UTC)
Well, the Cork geek dinner went ahead last night in Proby’s Bistro, as planned. It seems to have been a great success - at least, everyone told me they enjoyed it anyway! Robert Scoble and Maryam were there and despite having come from the IT@Cork conference where Robert delivered two great talks, Robert still made it his business to try to talk to everyone. Maryam, despite being annoyed by Frank, confided that it was one of the best geek dinners she had attended because we didn’t ...

The site was offline because I exceeded my hosting bandwidth allowance - due to the unprecedented success of my podcasts! A victim of my own success! Tom Raftery's I.T. viewsRiya frustrations (28.11.2005, 19:10 UTC)
I received an Alpha invite to try out Riya the other day. I have posted about Riya previously and it does sound like it will be an exciting application - it is an online photo application (like Flickr) but it has facial recognition software built-in. This means that once you upload a photo and tell Riya who is in the photo, it will recognise them in any other photos you upload. This will help enormously when you want to search for pictures subsequently as currently there is no real way to search...

Tom Raftery's I.T. viewsI need to improve the podcasts (28.11.2005, 10:12 UTC)
Hey all, I need to work on the quality of my podcasts - the content is great, I think. This not due to me in any way, it is simply due to my good fortune in attracting great interviewees. I need to improve my audio quality though and I also need to ‘professionalise’ the podcasts - you know, have a catchy, unique, jingle for opening and closing the show. On the audio front, I currently record the calls using a phone recorder accessory I bought in Maplins - I connect this to my San...
