Michele Neylon :: PensieriLast chance to fight EU data retention (9.12.2005, 14:43 UTC)
From DRI : “Next Tuesday, the 13th of December, the European Parliament will vote on a Data Retention Directive [1]. This proposes to extend data retention to the Internet, and will result in your ISPs logging every email you send, every web page you visit, and everything else you do online and storing that information for several years. We urge you to email, fax or phone your MEPs [2] as soon as possible to express your opposition to this measure, which will introduce mass surveillance ...

Michele Neylon :: PensieriNominet Rebrands (9.12.2005, 10:12 UTC)
Nominet, the UK domain registry authority, has just completed a corporate rebranding. It will probably take members a bit of time to get used to the new navigation, but the new look is quite clean and tidy.

Michele Neylon :: PensieriIncorrect Whois Data - GAO Reports to US Congress (9.12.2005, 00:12 UTC)
I recently posted about the importance of maintaining accurate information in domain whois. Earlier today (yesterday if you want to be really pedantic) the GAO (US Government Accountability Office) released its report on INTERNET MANAGEMENT- Prevalence of False Contact Information for Registered Domain Names. (pdf) The reports introduction makes for interesting reading: “Based on test results, GAO estimates that 2.31 million domain names (5.14 percent) have been registered with patently ...

Michele Neylon :: PensieriAdventures in Domains - Dot EU Launch (8.12.2005, 19:06 UTC)
Yesterday, at 11am CET the .eu sunrise one started. According to a press release from Eurid the following were the most requested domains in the first day: sex.eu hotel.eu travel.eu jobs.eu hotels.eu casino The fact that a domain has been requested does not mean that it will actually be granted. The process for handling the initial registrations is anything but simple and automatic (like .com) so it will probably be some time before we know who has been granted what… If you h...

Michele Neylon :: PensieriSpamAssassin 3.0.5 RELEASED (7.12.2005, 08:17 UTC)
Justin Mason has announced the release of SpamAssassin 3.0.5. He describes it as a maintenance release: If you are already running the more up-to-date, stable 3.1.0, pay no attention! This is only for people who are stuck on 3.0.x for some reason. The full changelog is on the Spam Assassin site, but an abbreviated one was included with the announcement: - - bug 4464: Trivial doco change - - bug 4346: Skip large messages in sa-learn - - bug 4570: Optimize a regexp that was blowing perl ...

Michele Neylon :: PensieriEU to vote on Data Retention (7.12.2005, 00:56 UTC)
The debacle surrounding data retention in Europe (and Ireland) has been dragging on for the last couple of years. Although it is a very important issue for service providers of all sizes and also has important implications for the public, press coverage of the issue has been poor at best. One possible explanation of the lack of press coverage is that the issues themselves are complex and highly technical. Another is that EU legislation is nebulous at best. So what is it all about? Who will be ...

Michele Neylon :: PensieriWhere to buy geeks gadgets in Ireland? (6.12.2005, 14:06 UTC)
As Christmas will be upon us all very soon it is only natural that people are organising presents - both personal and corporate. Last night we got some very generous hampers from DEG, so I know my mother will be very happy. If you are looking for “techie toys” however, where exactly would you go in Ireland? This very question came up on a mailing list earlier today and it was nice to see that a number of Irish sites were suggested: Zuco B Cool Gadgets Gadgets Online (seems t...

Michele Neylon :: PensieriPhishing Domains (5.12.2005, 17:04 UTC)
Over the past few days we seem to have attracted a number of “charming” clients who must think we are mentally defective. Some of the domains these people have ordered are hilarious. Due to privacy concerns I cannot give the exact domain names, but I can give you a flavour of them: genericerrormessage.tld - presumably to mask the actual site’s content bankname-group.com - the “bankname” being replaced by a real bank’s name. The funny thing is that the domai...

Michele Neylon :: PensieriLinux Email for the part-time sysadmin (4.12.2005, 15:11 UTC)
A lot of small to medium sized businesses do not have dedicated IT staff. They may outsource to an IT services company, but more often than not somebody is “elected” as the resident “IT expert” as they know slightly more than their colleagues. So how can someone in this position get to grips with setting up an office email server? Well they could “google” for the answers, but that would probably take more time than it would bring benefits. A better alternativ...

Michele Neylon :: PensieriSkype Cybersquatted (3.12.2005, 17:38 UTC)
One of the downsides of automated domain registration systems is that there are no checks on trademark infringement. However all registries either have a dispute resolution policy of their own or can refer the parties in question to one of the internationally recognised bodies that can act on their behalf. Skype, for example, ran into issues in the UK, where another company had grabbed the co.uk domain. The judgement makes for interesting reading. Needless to say any company attempting to use...

Michele Neylon :: PensieriHave You Booked Your EU Domain? Protect Your Brand (3.12.2005, 17:33 UTC)
The EU domain will enter sunrise 1 later this week, so if you hold a trademark you really should make sure that your request is submitted. If you don’t have a trademark you can still apply during the sunrise 2 period if you hold a “prior right”. Of course .eu isn’t the only “show” in town. A lot of people seem to forget about other regional TLDs. If you are selling into other EU country markets then it makes sense to protect your brand as much as possible.

Michele Neylon :: PensieriGallic Madness - France to Ban Free Software (2.12.2005, 21:26 UTC)
According to a press release from Free Software Foundation France, the French government is on the point of banning free software. The French revolution may have removed the royal family, but a couple of hundred years later it looks like the new royalty are removing liberties from the populace. If it was April 1st I would consider this a joke and laugh it off, however it seems to be the truth. I would wonder if this is even legal. Surely it constitutes an infringement of a freedom of expre...

Michele Neylon :: PensieriSlick Marketing Is Not A Replacement For Bad Service (1.12.2005, 16:04 UTC)
I don’t care how much money a company spends on marketing. If their service is rubbish it will not help. It’s amusing that Hugh is complaining about An Post, as they obviously spent several Euro on their direct marketing to me today. I got a rather oversized envelope with brochure etc., telling me about their “wonderful” services. What services? The postman in Carlow seems to have serious issues with delivering our mail before 1pm, and when he does he seems to ignore th...

Michele Neylon :: PensieriPractical eGovernment - Electoral Registers (1.12.2005, 00:03 UTC)
It’s nice to see local government making practical use of technology. Cllr Damien Blake is recommending that people check the Donegal electoral register directly online. Are they the only local authority to have put the register online? Seemingly not, but it’s not the sort of thing that seems to be publicised.. I usually get these really annoying letters through my letterbox expecting me to jump through hoops instead of offering me a simple solution .. EDIT: Just checked the entry ...

Michele Neylon :: PensieriNew Adsense Features (30.11.2005, 22:29 UTC)
Over the last few weeks Google Adsense has added a number of new features for publishers. Some are probably better than others. The “advertise on this site” feature is being pushed by Google as a way of increasing your revenue, however it does not link into the referral program. I would have thought that a fairly high proportion of publishers would be using the referral program in the hope of earning extra cash, but the lack of any incentive on the “advertise on this site&#8221...

Michele Neylon :: PensieriSourceforge.net gets a new look (30.11.2005, 20:02 UTC)
In case you aren’t familiar with it SourceForge is probably the most important online portal for open source software on the ‘net. There are a lot of other sites offering resources, articles, scripts and downloads, but SourceForge is where a very large portion of the more important projects have found a home. I’ve been using SourceForge intermittently for the last 4 years, so I got a bit of surprise when I logged in last night. They’ve completely overhauled the entire in...

According to Bank of Ireland’s Dermot Nolan, Head of Business Marketing: “Ireland has been recognised by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor as being the second most entrepreneurial country in the EU with one in twelve working adults currently engaged in entrepreneurial activity” It’s a nice statistic, but the number of formations, while reflecting possible optimism, does not mean ...

Michele Neylon :: PensieriThe Future of the IE Namespace (29.11.2005, 14:05 UTC)
What does the future hold for the IE namespace, the IEDR and their clients? This year has seen a lot of movement in the world of domains, with .EU to launch shortly and a number of other fiascos and successes already destined to the history books. Earlier this year we all thought that we would witness the launch of a dedicated namespace for “mature” content - .xxx - however this was “nipped in the bud” by a prudish US government administration. Closer to home the Spani...

Michele Neylon :: PensieriThe Humble Hyperlink (29.11.2005, 00:00 UTC)
To link, or not to link, that is the question. Hyperlinks are one of the most important elements of a website. They help you move from page to page and from site to site. Hardly a revelation - I know, however earlier this evening I was looking over a list of sites that had been nominated for an award. The list was not printed out, but was on a website (novel concept this internet thing), so I would have thought that providing links to the nominated sites would have been a natural part of it all...

Michele Neylon :: PensieriBrand Image - Choosing the Right Partner (27.11.2005, 15:28 UTC)
When I think of suppliers and clients I often prefer to refer to the relationship as a partnership of sorts. Some people may view this as being merely a marketing ploy, however I would disagree. If you are serious about your business and want to promote a positive image for it then you need to be very careful who you rely on to provide you with the required services. In our line of business we deal with a wide variety of companies and individuals that help us do what we do the way that we do i...

Michele Neylon :: PensieriIrish Blogs Aggregator - minor change (27.11.2005, 15:05 UTC)
I made a minor change to the “planet” earlier this morning As there are now over 40 feeds “subscribed” I thought faster updates were merited, so you should now see your posts appearing a little faster. The aggregator will now poll your feeds hourly for changes. I’d love to be able to do a few more interesting things with the site, but as I’m not a programmer I will have to wait until such time as I can either pay someone to make the changes or someone offer...
