The Hurler On The DitchOutsourcing Torture (6.12.2005, 20:00 UTC)
This has become a hot topic in recent days. The New Yorker Magazine had a lengthy but very relevant article some time ago.On January 27th, President Bush, in an interview with the Times, assured the world that “torture is never acceptable, nor do we hand over people to countries that do torture.” Maher Arar, a Canadian engineer who was born in Syria, was surprised to learn of Bush’s statement. Two and a half years ago, American officials, suspecting Arar of being a terrorist, ...

The Hurler On The DitchGoogle book scanning (5.12.2005, 11:33 UTC)
A great article by George Dyson Why does this strike such a nerve? Because so many of us (not only authors) love books. In their combination of mortal, physical embodiment with immortal, disembodied knowledge, books are the mirror of ourselves. Books are not mere physical objects. They have a life of their own. Wholesale scanning, we fear, will strip our books of their souls.in Edge.org (thanks Boing Boing)

The Hurler On The DitchJudicial Murder (1.12.2005, 11:40 UTC)
Judicial murder is still murder...A distressed Kim Nguyen, the mother of convicted drug smuggler Nguyen Tuong Van, has left Changi Prison after seeing her son for the last time before he is hanged....it saddens me that in the 21st. century people who claim to be civilized can do this. You can help Amnesty International Australia. and here hurry, this is no way for a young man to die, there are only a few hours if the murder is not stopped. The Age

The Hurler On The DitchThe Mythical Man-Month (1.12.2005, 11:27 UTC)
In 1975, Frederick Brooks published The Mythical Man-Month. It had no right to succeed. The book detailed Brooks' experience managing IBM's bet-the-company System/360 computers and OS/360 software, and featured odd illustrations, an awkward title, and loads of jargon. Yet Brooks' deconstruction of what went right and wrong became a must-read among tech and nontech execs; dog-eared copies are still passed around. Fortune

An implication that the tech sector pays the PAYE and not the workersA group representing high-tech companies has said a recent debate about whether or not Ireland is a 'tax haven' is missing the point. ICT Ireland chairman Michael Daly, who is also IBM's general manager in Ireland, said the tech sector was contributing €629m a year in Corporation Tax and €1.7 billion a year in PAYE and PRSI contributions to the Exchequer. ...they can if it makes them feel good and I can't see how ...

The Hurler On The DitchDisfiguring the Countryside (28.11.2005, 17:20 UTC)
Graffiti is a blight on our whole environment and a rapidly spreading epidemic. I have watched as the city (Dublin) has become disfigured over the past few months.Recently I travelled on the motorway to the Midlands and found that elaborate 'tags' as this graffiti is known sprayed on the concrete pillars supporting the flyovers. Many of these 'tags' are very elaborate and took several hours to spray. As they are on concrete they will be difficult and expensive to remove. Street furniture has als...

Recently I was startled and felt intimidated as I approached the cash desk in a large shop. The person in front of me was dressed from head to toe in black long flowing robes. What intimidated me was that the face was completely covered in the same black material with just a narrow quarter inch slit for the eyes. I don't know whether it was a man or woman though the assumption was that it was a woman of middle east origin. If I wanted a good disguise for a robbery this was it! The face hidden fr...

The Hurler On The DitchThere are Bugs and there are BUGS (9.11.2005, 22:08 UTC)
Last month automaker Toyota announced a recall of 160,000 of its Prius hybrid vehicles following reports of vehicle warning lights illuminating for no reason, and cars' gasoline engines stalling unexpectedly. But unlike the large-scale auto recalls of years past, the root of the Prius issue wasn't a hardware problem -- it was a programming error in the smart car's embedded code. The Prius had a software bug. With that recall, the Prius joined the ranks of the buggy computer -- a club that bega...

The Hurler On The DitchWho will control the internet (11.10.2005, 19:13 UTC)
John Naughton draws attention to a very important piece in today's Herald Tribune Beyond the headlines, a critically important battle for control of the Internet is being played out. On the one side is the United States, which wants to retain supervision of the Internet and has managed to get the reluctant support of most of the global Internet community, which sees America as the least bad of the possible ultimate guardians of the system. On the other side is a collection of states keen on ge...
