anthonymcg.comSort (23.12.2005, 18:18 UTC)
That’s what I plan to do over the Christmas holidays. A small sample: Starting to learn guitar: Have been putting that off for 6 months. Watch the mountain of DVDs I bought. Still suprised at how many I seem to have amassed. Get Windows reinstalled on the PC and finally see if I can get the front USB ports working. Of course, over the holidays I’ll be spending lots of time with friends and family. Included in that will be the wedding of my cousin and an Aslan gig in the Po...

Wow. Just wow. Unless you’ve been hiding in a cave for the past six months then you can’t have failed to see the humdrum and buzz generated towards Peter Jackson’s latest epic. I personally, loved the Lord of Rings movies and was looking forward to it. To do a film like this after coming out of the Rings saga is a testament to how ballsy a filmmaker he is. The following will not contain any major spoilers so feel free to read on if you want my take on the movie (I’ve se...

anthonymcg.comWeird Habits meme (18.12.2005, 14:33 UTC)
Janine finally remembered to tag me to do a meme. First the rules: The first player of this game starts with the topic “five weird habits of yourself,” and people who get tagged need to write an entry about their five weird habits as well as state this rule clearly. In the end, you need to choose the next five people to be tagged and link to their web journals. Now onto my list of weird and not-so wonderful habits. I never trust myself that I have the right amount when paying...

anthonymcg.comAnd so this is… (14.12.2005, 23:12 UTC)
…Christmas obviously. We had the work do down in the Johnstown Inn Hotel on Monday night. It went really well and I was quite impressed with the size of my bed. Most of the staff got stuck with single beds but some lucky souls, including yours truly, got a king size bed. The night itself was great as we got a lovely three course meal and then got thrown out of a function we were invited into by another company. Long story, turns out some of the women who work in our office are &#822...

anthonymcg.comLoose Cows (11.12.2005, 18:44 UTC)
I like that title. We came across a group of cows on the road near Dunboyne while on the way to football today. We called a local farmer who we thought owned the cows. When we were on the way back they were still there so we pulled in and tried to find a place to get them off the road. We put them in an adjacent field and called the Gardai to inform them. Here’s what else has been happening: Tomorrow night is the Christmas party in work and we’re having an overnighter in a...

anthonymcg.comTony’s Thumbs-Up Award of Total Excellence (6.12.2005, 23:02 UTC)
Some of you may be familiar with Dave of Blogography fame (those who aren’t, go visit…….now). He does cartoon stuff on his site and recommends things sometimes with a little graphic of him. I asked him if he could do me a similiar one and lo and behold he got back to me in record time with a smashing graphic that fits the bill exactly. So expect to see a lot more of it over the coming weeks. Cheers Dave.

anthonymcg.comFake or Foto? (6.12.2005, 22:50 UTC)
Got this from Podz. It’s called Fake or Foto? and you basically have to guess which of the images are CG and which are real. I got 8/10 so it’s not bad going. BTW: If you noticied a bit of weirdness in the feed it’s due to the fact that I updated any posts with pics in them to reflect the modified CSS.

More linkys to explore: One of the many video tributes to George Best who was buried today in his native Belfast. Very funny video of Will Ferrell as George Bush talking about climate change. The clip formed part of a recent TV special in the States called “Earth to America”. Super Monks (direct link): Really cool CG animation of monks fighting back against maruading Vikings. I forgot to mention it last week but I ordered a Samsung Syncmaster 930BF from Komplett to replace my old 15″ CRT that I’ve had since 1999. The old one was grand but I decided to take the plunge and splash out on a 19″ LCD. It arrived on Thursday but I didn’t really get a chance to play around with it until today and I’m tremendously happy with it. One of the things you have to worry about with LCDs is the possibility of dead pixels but thankfully there were none....

Originally saw this over at Kev’s blog where he linked an article from the Register explaining how a Dalek’s porno video was pulled from eBay by the BBC. It’s a fantastically ridiculous piece of news and the best part is the quote from Tim Hancock, director of Terry Nation’s estate (creator of the Daleks): “The reason the Daleks are still the most sinister thing in the universe is because they do not make things like porn. They weren’t ever intended to be s...

On Friday night I went to a fantastic gig by an up and coming band called The Finest. They just happen to be my mates too. For those who don’t recall, I met some of the lads from the band during the Oxegen festival this year. They play lots of gigs around the city and I had been to see them live in Whelans but most of their gigs tend to be on the southside which is awkward to get from late at night. Luckily one of the lads (Murray, cheers man) let me stay over in his place so I wouldn&...

anthonymcg.comMy Photos update (27.11.2005, 21:31 UTC)
I’ve made quite a significant change to the way photos are displayed on the site. I’ve installed FAlbum which is a WordPress plugin that reads my photos from Flickr and presents them in a nicely navigatable way. I’m pretty impressed by it and it also uses friendly URLs. Just a couple of things to fix: I need to sort the picture handling within posts with more CSS. Get the random photos back and displayed better in the sidebar. When viewing a full size pic, it overlays on ...

anthonymcg.comRIP George Best (25.11.2005, 14:39 UTC)
After almost two months in hospital fighting various infections, George Best died this afternoon in London’s Cromwell Hospital. To anyone who enjoyed football he was a class act and one of a kind. Obviously, I never got to see him play in person but the footage I’ve seen on television showed just how much skill he had with a ball. All geniuses have a flaw and unfortunately George’s affinity for alcohol led to a lot of bad press and ultimately cost him his life. RIP.

Last Thursday was the 2005 Net Visionary Awards in Clontarf Castle. My boss was nominated in the eGovernment category for our site dublin.ie Unfortunately he didn’t win but we did have a great night out. I got to meet a couple of people who I’ve only talked to on the phone so it was nice. Michele runs down the winners in this post. Next year I’d like to win one of them as the new site will be live by then. It’s a tough job though as the competition is excellent.

I’m convinced I can spread the virus by phone after Mark got sick just by talking to me. anthonymcg.comCold (12.11.2005, 19:41 UTC)
The title of this post is meant to indicate two things. Firstly it’s that I have a nasty cold on me at the moment. Haven’t been well since Wednesday and it’s not responding to the whole Beecham’s Hot Blackcurrant assault I’ve been using. It seems that a lot of people are unwell of late. That sentence brings me to the second point in that the weather has taken a turn over the past couple of days. I noticied it last night when we went for a few pints after work and, ...

Well today I passed my Driver Theory Test. What is it? Basically a test which ensures you’re not a complete dumbass when it comes to road procedure and signage. I mean you’d have to be really stupid to get some of those questions wrong. One of them reads: Q. Should you allow children to stand with their heads up through an open sun-roof? A. (a) Yes at speeds below 50 kilometres per hour. (b) Yes, provided they wear eye protection. (c) No. If someone gets that wrong they sh...

Today was officially one of the worst this year weatherwise(according to my painting of how my commute went). When I left work it was pretty windy but when I got to the bus stop it just started plunging down and my clothes were ringing went by the time I got on the bus. Then the journey took 2 hours instead of the usual 1 hour at rush hour. Bugger. Anyhow, had to cancel the planned training session for tonight. It wasn’t worth bringing the lads out in weather like that, especially sin...

I’ve been looking forward to this one for a while cos I’m a big fan of Cameron Crowe’s films. Both Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous are among my favourite films and I tend to expect quite a lot of this director. I won’t mention the fiasco that was Vanilla Sky. This film follows Drew Baylor, a twenty-something shoe designer from Oregan who’s father passes away suddenly and he is pulled into the world his father once inhabited back in his home state of Kentucky. Tonight I’m preparing 3 laptops that my uncle is taking to Africa on part of his trip with the Niall Mellon Township Challenge. Basically builders and associated craftsmen get sponsorship together and travel to townships in South Africa to build houses for the people there. My uncle normally brings anything he can source so this time he decided it would be laptops. He has secured 5 in all, 3 of which I have tonight and the other 2 I’ll work on tomorrow. anthonymcg.comCommuting (25.10.2005, 08:47 UTC)
What is it about Dublin traffic that it always seems to be busier on a day when it rains? I got off the bus this morning at 9:18. I had been due to get on the bus at 8:10 but it only arrived at 8:20. In normal conditions it would have been a half hour to fourty minute trip so why the major delay? Well, I have a theory that a lot of people who normally take the bus just hop into their cars on rainy days. Personally I find it bloody ridiculous. This is Ireland for God’s sake!! It rains most...

A few things I’ve been meaning to link to: Clerks 2 has started filming and Kevin Smith is putting up various video posts about the production. I’ve used Meebo a couple of times recently. It allows you to get a smart little web based interface to most of the IM systems. I stumbled across it after Dave mentioned it and showed a screenshot. Since Wallace and Gromit’s first short, “Grand Day Out”, I’ve always enjoyed watching these characters. Is it childish? Probably but what’s not to like about them? Their first big screen outing is backed by Dreamworks but the film still has a homegrown feel about it and benefits as a result. The titular pair own a pest control business and in the run up to the yearly giant vegetable contest, are kept particularly busy. That is until the were-rabbit appears and sta...

This is one of those updates. On Wednesday night I went down to the pub to watch Ireland but on a mediocre display against Switzerland. They didn’t do much and probably didn’t deserve to go through. A million and one punters have now had their say so I’m not going to add my 2 cents in. Alas, I was disappointed along with the rest of the country. Thursday night was spent in the International Comedy Club in Dublin laughing at: Aidan Bishop, Dermot McMorrow, Tommy Nicholson...
